Bath fun
Expert's judgement

Tummy Tub makes bathing fun and gives quiet nights

Babies relax as if in the womb

It is not easy for some young parents who can suddenly feel very nervous about the care their new little one needs.: First there is all the stress and excitement of the birth and then comes the reality and sometimes panic. After all, a cry from a baby can mean so many things - it could mean a little pain, hunger, a full nappy or simply that a sleep is all that’s wanted.

Talking of sleeping:
During the day babies can be demanding but during the night the attention they need can seem much more, especially as this is the time when you would very much like to get some sleep for yourself. "For the babies their world is exciting. For months they have been confined to their mother’s womb and suddenly they have to make an enormous transition to the outside world." writes Dr. Peter Schwaab, Head of the Gynaecology Department of the Maria-Josef Clinic in Greven (D) about the distress of babies.

But parents can help their babies; "Nearly as nice as mummy’s tummy", is the bathing method that is both simple and revolutionary and comes from Holland and has already been used by more than 600,000 mothers. When your baby is unsettled, a relaxing bath in a specially shaped tub will help.

"Because of the shape of the ‘bathing bucket’ the baby adopts the foetal position. Baby feels safe and secure and visibly calms", explains midwife Mena van Damme, chief midwife from the maternity Unit in Soest.

Knowing the best way how to hold their baby can be rather stressful for parents. However, with Tummy Tub this is made much easier, as the volume of water within the Tub helps the baby to be almost buoyant. Also as there is less surface area, the water remains warmer for longer. As less water is needed, there is less weight to be carried and this is very important to new mothers.

The Dutch midwives, nursery nurses and child psychologists who developed this revolutionary bath baptised their concept ‘Tummy Tub’. They are pleased that this new bathing philosophy is also getting very popular in other countries with many maternity hospitals using the Tummy Tub. Not only in maternity hospitals are mothers shown how to use the new bath but also in ante-natal classes, post-natal classes and baby massage classes. Although the Tummy Tub was developed for babies from birth to 6 months, many midwives and parents tell us that their children love being in this familiar and trusted environment for up to two years of age because they feel so secure and warm.

In the development of Tummy Tub it was very important to ensure that the material used was environmentally and baby and parent friendly. However, safety was given top priority therefore we are pleased to advise that Tummy Tub complies with the strict criteria of the BSI and TUV Rheinland and is permitted to carry the seal GS (Proven Safety).

"First I was sceptical, it looked very unusual but my midwife persuaded me to have a go and now I am totally converted by it’s advantages and benefits" writes Dr Sylvia Schneider, a young mother and psychologist from Dresden about her experiences with Tummy Tub.

Prof. Dr Dirk Heinrich, Head of the Gynaecology Department of the hospital of Pforzheim, confirms –"In our department the babies are bathed in Tummy Tub. It is fascinating to see how quickly stressed babies calm and relax and they stop crying".

From Prof. Heinrich’s medical point of view, it is the position adopted by the baby that is most important, whereby the baby can feel the walls of the Tub. This position recreates the feeling of being back in the womb and very importantly the baby is free to move it’s legs and arms without losing the secure feeling. "This is a total contrast with bathing in a traditional bath in which the baby has to be held all the time in an unnatural position and is restricted in it’s movements by the hands of the father or mother" This is the argument of Prof. Heirich to his colleagues for using the bathing bucket, Tummy Tub.
